Thryoid storm nursing (thyrotoxic crisis) NCLEX lecture that covers the pathophysiology, causes, signs and symptoms, and nursing interventions. Thyroid storm is a complication of untreated hyperthyroidism that presents with excessive thyroid hormone production. Symptoms of thyroid storm include fever (hyperthermia), tachycardia, hypertension, restlessness etc. These symptoms can lead to a myocardial infarction or congestive heart failure. Patients at risk for thyroid storm are patients who have hyperthyroidism that may not be taking their antithyroid medication, experienced an illness/stressful event, has Grave’s Disease, or taking medications that increase thyroid hormones (Salicylates).
