The clonus test is a type of reflex test that helps us assess whether the central nervous system is irritable, which could lead to seizures and other issues.

This video demonstrates what a positive clonus test looks like, as well as a negative clonus test.

To test clonus, have the patient dangle their legs off of a exam table or chair. Then, quickly dorsiflex the foot. If the foot begins to spasm or beat up and down several times, the clonus test is considered positive. If nothing happens when you dorsiflex the foot, or if only a minor jerk or two occurs, the clonus test is generally considered negative.
