In this nursing skills video, Nurse Sarah demonstrates a simple technique to reduce the risk of coring when using a needle with a beveled tip.

First, perform hand hygiene, remove the top of the vial, and clean it using alcohol prep for around 30 seconds. Next, place the needle on the top of the vial, allowing it to rest in the center of the bullseye. The needle should be at around a 45 degree angle for the starting position.

As you press down on the needle, quickly rotate up to 90 degrees while simultaneously penetrating the vial. After the needle has penetrated the vial, press any air you previously pulled into the vial into the air space of the vial.

NOTE: Always follow the latest nursing protocols and manufacturing instructions when performing nursing skills.
