SSRIs work by blocking the reuptake of the neurotransmitter serotonin by the pre-synaptic neuron, which helps increase serotonin levels in the brain.

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are prescribed for depression, panic, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, and PTSD.

Common SSRIs prescribed in the US include: Paroxetine, Fluoxetine, Fluvoxmine, Sertraline, Citalopram, Escitalopram, Vilazodone

The nurse should monitor the patient for serotonin syndrome, common side effects (nausea, diarrhea, loss in libido, erectile dysfunction, insomnia, dry mouth), and should educate the patient to never abruptly stop taking the medication because discontinuation syndrome can occur.
