A pleural friction rub is a lung sound that tends to have a low pitch and a grating sound that you’ll hear during a lung assessment / auscultation. This occurs when inflamed layers of the lung begin to contact and rub against one another.
A pleural friction rub can occur during conditions such as pleurisy, pulmonary edema, pneumonia, and more.
