Perineal care (also called peri-care) and Foley catheter care for a female patient: nursing procedure demonstration.
In this video, Nurse Sarah performs perineal care (peri-care) and catheter care (cath care) on a female patient with an indwelling Foley catheter.
It is very important to provide peri-care and catheter care so that you can clean the area to prevent a CAUTI (catheter-associated urinary tract infections) from forming.
Some important key points you want to remember is that you always want to verify the patient, explain the procedure, and gain consent.
Gather your supplies, perform hand hygiene (handwashing), and don gloves. You always want to wipe in a direction from top to bottom on a female patient (from genitals toward the anus).
When cleaning the urinary meatus (pee hole), you want to wipe in a direction that moves away from it and not toward it. You want to change cloths or wipes as recommended by your facility.
The exact sequence used can vary depending on your facility. For example, some may want to you provide cath care first and then peri-care, or vice versa. In addition, some facilities may want you to start at the genitals and work your way to the thigh, while others may suggest starting at the thigh and working your way to the genitals.
There are different techniques and supplies used for this nursing skill. Always verify and follow your facility’s protocols when performing this procedure.
