Macrolides are antibiotics that are most helpful against gram-positive bacteria, though they can also work on some gram-negative bacteria such as salmonella, chlamydia, and more.

Which medications are included?

-Fidaxomicin
-Azithromycin
-Clarithromycin
-Erythromycin

How are macrolides administered? These medications are commonly administered orally (P.O.); however, they can also be administered via the parenteral route (most commonly I.V.).

What is the mechanism of action for macrolides? These antibiotics are bacteriostatic, meaning they inhibit the growth of the targeted bacteria. The do this by targeting the larger 50s subunit of the ribosome, affecting translocation and inhibiting how messenger and transfer RNA move and create proteins.
