Infant respiratory rate assessment – pediatric nursing skills for newborn vital signs or head-to-toe assessments.
In this video, Nurse Sarah demonstrates how to assess the respirations (respiratory rate) of a newborn or infant as a part of collecting infant vital signs.
A normal respiratory rate in an infant is around 30-60 breaths per minute. Before assessing the respiratory rate, you’ll want to look for signs of respiratory distress. Look for nasal flaring, abnormal skin color, or chest retractions.
Count the rate for one full minute by observing the rise and fall of the chest.
It can be difficult to assess pediatric patients because they can move, cry, and become upset during the assessment.
