How to remove an N95 respirator mask (doffing an N95 mask) tutorial. N95 respirators provide protection for nurses and other healthcare workers when exposed to potentially dangerous or infectious airborne particles or diseases.
After wearing the N95 mask or being potentially exposed to infectious diseases, you’ll want to remove the mask properly to minimize your risk of contamination or infection.
In this video, Nurse Sarah demonstrates how to safely remove an N95 mask. Please note: always follow your facility’s protocols and the mask manufacturer’s latest guidelines, especially during a pandemic.
Avoid touching the front of the mask after exposure, due to contamination risk. Pull the bottom strap over the head first. Next, remove the top strap and pull the mask away from the face. You can then clean, store, or dispose of the n95 mask per your facility’s (and mask manufacturer’s) protocol.
Finally, be sure to perform hand hygiene once you have removed the N95 mask.
