Using a cane on stairs: In this video, I demonstrate how to use a cane when going up and down stairs. This is important when educating patients, and nursing students will also have to know this for nursing exams such as NCLEX or ATI.
The key point you’ll want to remember when using crutches is good = up; down = bad. What does that mean? You’ll want to start with the good leg first when going up stairs, and the bad leg will go first when going down stairs. Also, be sure the patient is holding the cane on the strong side.
