How to check respiratory rate nursing assessment skill (and CNA skill): Counting respirations during a physical nursing assessment seems like a simple nursing skill, but it can be tricky in some cases.
For example, it can be difficult to count the respiratory rate on some patients who don’t have a lot of chest or shoulder movement while breathing. Also, you’ll want to know how to count respirations without the patient knowing that you are doing so, because patients will often alter their respiratory rate if they know you are assessing it.
When assessing the respiratory rate, one rise and one fall of the chest equals one breath.
In this video, I give some tips on how to count the respiratory rate in patients without them knowing. I also give general tips on counting respirations during your respiratory exam assessment.
I also have videos covering head-to-toe assessment, as well as checking the pulse points, blood pressure, and more.
