In this video, we demonstrate going up the stairs using crutches, as well as going down the stairs with crutches safely. This not only helps with patient education, but it also helps for nursing school exams such as ATI, HESI, or NCLEX.

Crutches are a form of assistive nursing device, as are canes and walkers. Going up or down stairs can be dangerous, especially when using an assistive nursing device. It is generally advised that people take elevators or other methods when possible. However, when no other option is available, a patient may need to use crutches on stairs, and this video provides a demonstration on how to do that.

When going up the steps, use the good leg first. Then bring up the crutches and the bad leg.

When going down the steps, the crutches go down first, then the bad leg, followed by the good leg.
